Sharon and Steve Birro of Quick Step in Shipley
(www.quickstepengraving.co.uk)
My husband has been in the shoe repairing industry since leaving school and I have had a number of occupations none of which has had anything to do with running a business.
For a number of years now we have wanted to open our own shop but as is usual we had trouble financing the venture.
To start the ball rolling I contacted Standard Engineering approximately 2 years ago and asked Keith Malyon (Sales Director) to send me some catalogues of machinery and prices; at which time we didn’t even have the finance in place let alone any premises in mind. He very politely told me I was getting a bit ahead of the game, but gave me average prices of what machinery I would need, what I could do without to start with and a number of other very relevant pieces of advice; none of which had anything to do with selling machinery but all of which was very relevant for a person with no business experience.
18 months later we had our finance, premises and business plan in place; we were ready to talk seriously about the machinery. Keith offered to come to the premises and suggest a possible layout and even e-mailed us a computer plan to work from. My husband and Keith spent some time discussing his machinery needs and reconciling them with the budget we had.
Due to delays and changing the shop location we didn’t actually place our order for a number of weeks but Keith was very understanding and kept me updated with production times and also offered to store the machinery until we were ready for delivery. All of this help was essential as I had planned a 3-week window to have the shop ready to open.
The machinery was delivered as promised at the end of the second week along with a machine they said they would transport for us from another location when they picked up some machinery we were selling to them. The three-week set up went to plan and “QUICK STEP” opened on the 13th August 2007.
During Keith’s last visit to take some pictures of the shop we talked for some time and again he offered a lot of advice on how to attract customers and more importantly how to keep them coming back.
I would like to thank Standard Engineering and Keith especially for their professionalism and excellent customer care. (I promise no money changed hands for this testimonial!) |
